High School Students Focus on Eyes
“I Only Have Eyes for You” - That could have
been theme for the Valentine’s Day Health Careers/High Adventure
(HC/HA) Post at LECOM Bradenton. Instead of focusing on hearts, the
topic was eyes. On Tuesday, February 14, 6 Manatee County high
school students learned about ophthalmology with hands on experience
of dissecting cows’ eyes.
To kick off the evening, William Soscia, M.D.
of The Eye Associates, spoke to the students about the various career
paths that a physician can take by specializing in the treatment of
eyes and eye diseases. He explained the differences in
ophthalmology and optometry.
Then the students moved from the lecture hall
to LECOM Bradenton’s
anatomy
lab for a brief lecture on the anatomy of the eye by Dr. Frank
Liuzzi, director and professor of Anatomy at LECOM Bradenton. With
the aid of three LECOM Bradenton medical students, the high school
students each dissected a cow’s eye. Visible reactions began with
squeamish looks but once they began to slice, fascination took over.
The next Health Career/High Adventure Post will
focus on paramedics and EMTs and will take place at Manatee
Technical Institute. The program will include practicing CPR on a
mannequin. For information or to register, contact Dr. Russell
