LECOM Bradenton Holds First White Coat Ceremony
LECOM Bradenton held the first white coat ceremony on
January 29th. At the ceremony, LECOM welcomed the Class
of 2008 to the noble profession of medicine.
The ceremony emphasized two important
principles in the education of this next generation of primary care
physicians -- the importance of competent and compassionate care for
the patient; and the professionalism that LECOM Bradenton will
instill in each of these students.
As the LECOM Bradenton deans presented the white
coats to each student, they were the first to receive the Class of
2008 into the medical profession. This hands-on experience
underscores the bonding process that takes place between teacher and
medical student and, later, between medical student and patient. The
coat, representing the mantle of scientific proficiency and the
responsibility of patient care, is placed on their shoulders by
individuals who have faith and confidence in each student’s ability to
carry out the distinguished traditions of osteopathic medicine.
At the conclusion of this ceremony, the members
of the Class of 2008 pledged their commitment to the principles of
osteopathic medicine – “the dynamic interaction of mind, body and
spirit; the body’s ability to heal itself, the primary role of the
musculoskeletal system; and preventive medicine as the key to
maintaining health.” They promised before all present to hold fast to
these osteopathic principles as they partner with their patients to
provide the best health care and to daily live out the example of what
an osteopathic physician should be.
