AOA President Visits LECOM
LECOM medical students received a pep talk from the leader of
osteopathic medicine in the United States. The president of the
American Osteopathic Association visited the LECOM campus on March 6
and spent the day chatting with first and second year students.
Philip Shettle, D.O. is a Florida
ophthalmologist, took office last summer with the theme pride in
osteopathic medicine. “We want to encourage pride in osteopathic
medicine,” Dr. Shettle told the students. “We want to encourage
pride in our students.”
He explained the goals of the AOA are for
collaboration, advocacy, research and membership. Dr. Shettle said
the AOA is there for physicians and students to work together, while
promoting osteopathic principles and better health care. He pointed
out the ongoing efforts for better research on osteopathic
manipulative treatments. Research is needed to prove the validity and
effectiveness of manipulation; osteopathic medicine needs statistics
to show that it does work to qualify for insurance.
