LECOM Live Helps Fund House
of Healing
Two nights of
LECOM Live raised $1000 for the Erie House of Healing.
The LECOM Sigma
Sigma Phi (SSP) honor society presented a check to the Erie House of
Healing Director Sr. Stephanie Schmidt, OSB. Presenting the check
were Pravin George, Desiree Yetter, Sr., Schmidt, Ian Humphreys, SSP
President, Mark Ignatious and Ashley Kittridge.
House of Healing
gives women involved in the criminal justice system the opportunity
to build a better future for themselves and their children in a
structured, caring, learning environment. Sigma Sigma Phi adopted
the House of Healing several years ago and have maintained a working
relationship with them ever since. Medical students have held
numerous volunteer events: craft making, game nights with the kids,
and dinners. Despite these efforts the students realized that there
is a financial need that must be fulfilled. In the past SSP has
raised money for the House of Healing through softball tournaments
and other athletic fundraisers.
Last spring SSP
held the first annual LECOM Live at 'The Club' and raised $300; this
fall the group held the second annual LECOM Live at Molly Brannigans
and raised more than $700. At both events, LECOM students and
faculty performed and numerous businesses in the community donated
prizes to help raise money. The second LECOM Live was a huge
success with more than 200 people attending and requests from the
student body and Molly Brannigans for a third LECOM Live have been
overwhelming.
Future plans for the House of Healing include more game nights with
the kids and a dinner for all the residents. A third annual LECOM
Live is currently being considered and details are developing.
