Pharmacy
student Alexandra Vasic assists Ed and Ruth Hall learn how they
can apply for a Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Plan.
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of
Pharmacy faculty members and students assisted more than 500
people with questions and concerns regarding the Medicare
Prescription Drug Benefit. A steady stream of Medicare eligible
patients and their family members or caretakers came through
McDowell Intermediate High School on Saturday, December 10. For
six hours, students used the Internet based Medicare Plan Tool
Finder to create plan comparisons that would help Medicare
beneficiaries choose the right plan for their prescription drug
needs.
Open enrollment for the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug
Benefit program began on November 15, 2005. However, many
seniors remain confused about which plan works best for their
needs, and they have become overwhelmed with an overload of
information from mailings, television commercials, and phone
calls. School of Pharmacy organized the benefit enrollment day
to help alleviate some of this stress.
Medicare benefit recipients can still enroll by December 31,
2005 for January coverage and they have until May 15, 2006 to
enroll without penalty. To learn how to compare prescription
